Ahmed M. Salem, PhD
Ahmed M. Salem is an Associate Professor in the Marine Engineering Technology Department at Sharjah Maritime Academy, UAE. He holds a PhD in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities (2007), where his dissertation focused on "Risk-Based Design for Fire Safety of Ro-Ro/Passenger Ships." He earned his MSc and BSc from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, graduating first in his class.
His research interests include fire safety design of ships, Monte Carlo simulation for uncertainty analysis, sensitivity analysis of fire models, and alternative marine fuels such as LNG. Ahmed has an extensive teaching portfolio, covering courses in Engineering Mechanics, Naval Architecture, Ship Design, Ship Construction, and Risk Management, among others.
Throughout his career, Ahmed has held significant academic positions at King Abdulaziz University and Alexandria University (Ahmed was the Head and acting Head of the Marine Engineering Department at King Abdulaziz University for almost four years). He served as the Head and Acting Head of the Marine Engineering Department at King Abdulaziz University for almost four years. In addition to his academic roles, he has been involved in consultancy work related to ship design, stability calculations, and risk management in various marine applications. His contributions to the field have been recognised with multiple honours, including the Egyptian Engineers Syndicate Award and a prestigious PhD scholarship at Strathclyde University.
Ahmed is actively involved in professional committees and serves as a reviewer for several reputable journals in the maritime engineering domain. His dedication to both teaching and research underscores his commitment to advancing marine engineering and ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime operations.
